This Pete the Cat activity goes with one of our favorite children’s books – Pete the Cat and his Four Groovy Buttons! These fun colorful groovy button pencil toppers are easy to make even for preschool and kindergarten ages and will get your kids excited about picking up their pencils! Hopefully soon you can find our Literary Guide to pair with this book in our TPT Store.

Craft Materials:
Buttons
Pipe Cleaners
Scissors
Pencils
*one of each item listed above per child*
Directions:
1.Begin by passing out one pencil, one pipe cleaner and one button to each child.
2. Using your scissors cut your pipe cleaner in half. This will leave plenty of room for small hands to have extra!
3. Have the kids thread the end of their pipe cleaner through one button hole, and then back through another button hole to both ends of the pipe cleaner are on the same side of the button.
4. Twist the short end of the pipe cleaner around the other side of the pipe cleaner.
5. Lay the button on the eraser top of the pencil, then begin to twist and wind the long pipe cleaner piece around the pencil.
The groovy buttons don’t fall off and if your kids play with them instead of writing then simply take them away! Our kids know it’s a special privilege to use their groovy button pencil toppers so they’re pretty good about not using them inappropriately! We love to pick out a stack of our favorite children’s books, read them together, then work through them with various crafts and activities! We are currently working through I Am Abraham Lincoln, Splat the Cat and Chomp. Pin this image:
