Shelby’s Snack Shack Preschool Game Review

If you’ve been around here at all you know that we love Educational Insights and that one of my absolute favorite preschool games is their Sneaky Snacky Squirrel Game! So when I heard that their pug mascot, Shelby, had a similar game called Shelby’s Snack Shack Game I KNEW it would be a hit at our house!  And would you believe that it arrived at my house on my son’s 4th birthday? They didn’t even know that but it was perfect timing! 🙂 One thing right away that I love about this game is that the kids don’t have to know how to read to play it. And in fact it is so simple for everyone to play it that the kids can easily beat their parents and vice versa!
The object of the game is to collect the most bones. There is a spinner board with two sides. First you spin the bone side to determine what your move is. There is an easy cheat sheet that I pictured below for you to keep on hand. If you land on a seagull AHHH! It stole your bones! You need to spin the number side to determine how many bones the seagull stole out of your pile. If you land on Shelby eating a bone, you can use the number spinner to determine how many bones you can eat from your neighboring players. If you land on Shelby playing with a flip flop it means she was too busy to get bones and you loose a turn. But my kids favorite thing to do is to land on a BONE! If you land on a bone you get to spin the number spinner and determine how many bones that you get to pick up and keep in your pile.
In addition to the spinner there is also a Shelby dog tweezer, plenty of bones, and little “dog bowls” – one for each player. Plus the game box doubles as a beach inside where all of the bones are “buried”.
How cute is this? And all of the dog bones have Shelby’s name written on them!
This game is fantastic for preschoolers (all the way up through adults of course). Using the Shelby “tweezers” is a FANTASTIC way to encourage fine motor skills use. Counting the bones of course is a great way to strengthen number recognition and counting skills. Kids also have to remember what each picture on the spinner represents to follow the directions.
My kids have just absolutely LOVED this game! They just adore Shelby and hurry to collect as many bones as they can! I think that Educational Insights’ animal “picker upper” / tweezers are just ingenious and about the cutest things I’ve seen before. Who wouldn’t love them?
