My Top 3 Blogging Goals for 2012 for Surviving a Teacher’s Salary

My Blogging Goals for 2012
1. Be Myself. Sounds simple – but in a growing world of bloggers competition can be ruthless. In the last year I’ve seen friends become enemies, bloggers get divorced, and greed take over quality and kindness – all due to blogging. If you don’t run a blog yourself you have NO idea what I’m talking about. Running a blog like mine is not just something you do whenever you feel like it. Although I do not spend 10 hours a day on it (many bloggers spend MORE than that!) it is time consuming and I am never off the computer for long. Over the holidays I purposefully shut down my computer most of the break because my family is more important. Plain and simple – they will always come first. It is VERY easy to look at another blogger’s numbers and be envious of how they got an extra 10,000 followers than you. I tend not to look at other blogs to be honest. I don’t have time and I lose focus of my own site. Numbers aren’t important – unless you want to work with better companies and have better opportunities. I prefer quality over numbers and I always have, but you DO have to have a balance of both to succeed.
2. Update my site. I am considering a HUGE upgrade for Surviving a Teacher’s Salary. Why? Right now I’m on Blogger, and to be honest I totally love it. BUT from what I have heard SEO (Search Engine Optimization) is better on WordPress, not to mention that WordPress is MUCH more customizable – but I am not completely sold yet. That also means I will have additional monthly fees for hosting as well as random server problems and all sorts of things I’m not sure if I’m ready to deal with. BUT I do want this site to be better for you guys. I want it more user friendly. I want a coupon database you can easily look up a coupon for a product you want. I want drop-down tabs at the top for finding articles easier. I also want to license my site so that no one can “steal” my idea and I want to offer you guys free apps. This blog is for YOU and I want it to be the best I can offer. How much does all of this cost? Very roughly a good $2000-$4000 depending on how elaborate.  I also want matching “branding” across all of my sites and business cards for a more professional appeal when dealing with companies.
3. Get a better schedule! As a blogger, housewife, mom of 2 boys at 2 different schools you would not beleive how crazy my schedule gets just from these things! I try very hard not to blog at all when my boys are home – they are my top priority. But they are only at their schools 3 hours a day – of which I have to run errands, clean the house, run between their schools, and of course – blog! Let me tell you that it is not nearly enough time! Not at all! We are trying to work out a better schedule for me so that I am not completely missing family time but still upholding what needs to be done online.

Blogging can be so exciting but it does take a lot of time. I was thinking of going over to WordPress but for now am contented with Blogger !

Anyway, just stopping by to wish you and your family a Happy, Joyful and Healthy New Year. May 2012 bring all the you desire and more.

  2. I made the switch over to WordPress this past year and am loving it! It is a scary change, but I highly recommend it! I had some help, but if you have any questions, feel free to ask!

Keep up the good work you are doing here. I, too, am trying to balance blogging and running a family – something that isn't easy to do! Hoping we both can find a "balance" this year! 🙂

    Happy New Year!

I think these are great goals! I've looked at wordpress, and for the time being I'm still pretty content with blogger. I find it user friendly for my purposes and feel my readers are more quality than quantity which is all I want.
