Everyday Uses Rock & Card Set from Educational Insights- Review and Giveaway!

This post may contain affiliate links, view our disclosure policy for details.

Educational Insights sent me this really awesome Everyday Uses Rock and Card Set and we LOVE it! Can you tell? I know I know, it’s just rocks- right? But what you don’t know is that:
1. My husband is a teacher and loves anything hands on for his classroom.
2. I used to collect rocks and minerals growing up (I know- geeky science nerd!).
3. My son loves to lick, smell, scrape, and manipulate everything he can get his hands on!

When we received it I’m not sure who was more excited between the three of us! The set is labeled for ages 8 and up, but to be very honest my son is only 4 years old and has learned interesting applications for EACH rock already! Already several times this week he has asked to learn more about the rocks. When you open up the box the inside of the lid (shown on the left) has each type of rock pictured very clearly with a number and the name of the rock. It can’t get any more simple than that! The set also came with a small sticker sheet of numbers from 1-12 that you were supposed to place on each corresponding rock.
Upon further inspection inside the box we found the instruction manual, but on the back was this pre-made quiz that you can copy and use for your kids/classroom! My husband especially loved this! He can have his kids in school learn about each different rock in the kit and then take a quiz- and he hardly has to do a thing! This is a VERY nice bonus in this kit! The quiz lists the 12 different rocks included in this kit and the students must match the rocks to their appropriate description. Also inside of the manual is a glossary and other activity suggestions to do in conjunction with this kit.
Also in the box are 12 large 9″x6″  identification cards that not only include the names and pictures of each rock in the kit, but on the front of the card there is a quick reference picture for what each rock can be used for. On the back of the card there is more interesting facts about the rock, the colors it can come in, what it can be used for, where it can be found, interesting tidbits, and some of them even have a “TRY THIS!” section for the kids to actually interact with the rock by moistening it, smelling it, etc.
Below you can see my son tasting the Halite. Halite is basically a form of table salt. My son was intrigued that salt could come in such a large block. We as adults have more than likely seen salt in different forms, but many times kids do not realize this. It was a real experience to look at the ID cards with the rock next to it, and realize that salt, marble countertops, graphite, and other rocks do not actually come in the shape of pencils and countertops!! Please note that the kit does NOT suggest that you taste this or any of the rocks. I personally allowed my son to lick this rock only! Do this at your own risk!

Here you can see my son and husband smelling the sulphur rock. YUCK! This kit is a great hands-on learning lab for kids and provides a multitude of sensory experiences that you and your children are sure to enjoy. I don’t have a picture of it but we also tried to write on paper with all of our rocks- of course the graphite (found in pencils!) showed the best.
Our family loves this Rock and Card set kit! Both parents and kids have learned many things from it and are enjoying trying new things with our rocks! Who knew so many different types of rocks could be used for so many different things? Now my son is forever searching for rocks in our backyard, then running up to us asking us what type of rock it is!

I highly suggest this Rock and Card set from Educational Insights! This is a fantastic tool to use for application lessons in science, for kids interested in rocks, for hands-on activities, and many more ideas. My husband was very impressed with such a nice set and has always wanted one for his classroom. It is extremely informational and full of fun facts and tidbits about each rock. The pictures on the ID cards are great quality and very attractive to look at. I love that the set includes numbers so that you can identify and label each rock. As you can see from all of the pictures even my 4 year old son is intrigued by learning about the rocks! Overall a fantastic kit- definitely worth the investment!!
Everyday Uses Rock and Card Set contains the following 12 rocks:
Bauxite, Coal, Dolomite, Feldspar, Graphite, Halite, Malachite,
Marble, Pyrolusite, Sphalerite, Sulfur, Talc

Our family also loves rocks, we collect one from every place we travel. It seems that students are fascinated by them also, we did a unit on rocks and made the 3 types of rocks as edible rocks. It was a huge hit!
