TriTective Review by Educational Insights

At Toy Fair a few weeks ago I had the treat of meeting Caitlin Hogan, inventor of TriTective which is put out by Educational Insights. Her game is inspired from years of playing word games in the car on road trips! This fun and challenging mystery word game is geared for children grades 5+ and for a good reason too! It’s a lot of fun but even I can get pretty stumped by some of it!

Just like a detective you have to solve this game by clues to figure out the 3 letter word. Sounds simple right? It’s not always as simple as it sounds! Above you see the top layer of cards spread out – each player receives 5 cards, except for 1 – that player is the spy and chooses one card – this will be the spy word. Each card has a yellow coded word, a blue, and a red coded word – each color determines the difficulty of the word.

Each player has a chance to lay their card down and ask if the spy word contains any of the same letters that is in the colored word that is being played. The spy then says yes or no, and the next player does the same. The challenge of the game is that you have to remember what letters have been played and may or may not be in the mystery word and then guess it!

My kids are way too little to play this right now but we can’t wait to take this with us on our big road trip this summer and share it with the rest of the family! It’s a great game that takes a little bit of strategy and a lot of remembering! Although we have to adjust it a bit my husband and I have been playing it together after the kid’s go to bed and we are really enjoying the challenge! Although I must say when I’m half asleep at night is not the best time to play! 🙂

This would make a great quieter activity center in middle/high school reading classes as well as for your older kids and adults at home! Not to mention that it comes in a great little travel tin so it would be fun for road trips too!
