Farmer’s Market Color Sorting Set by Learning Resources Review

I was so excited to review this hands-on Farmer’s Market Color Sorting Set from Learning Resources. It is one of their brand new products in 2012 and WOW – it has to be one of my favorite products from Learning Resources!
Absolutely fantastic quality and I am thoroughly impressed. As you take a peek at the pictures in this review I will mention that I did NOT enhance the colors in any of the photos – the colors in this set are surprisingly bright and was one of my favorite visual things about this set.

It comes with 5 plastic “fruit baskets”, the colored labels for each basket, an activity guide, and 25 pieces of very sturdy good quality fruit! The fruit is not the cheapy little plastic fruit you find in kitchen sets – they are fantastic.
They aren’t something that my kids can squish and ruin. Another big plus to this set is that it stores nicely in the box it comes in! Just stack the baskets on one side and dump all of the fruit on the other side!

Notice the bright colors? I don’t think I’ve ever seen such bold brightly colored fruit like this!! My kids immediately wanted to play with this set! In fact it was sort of funny because my oldest son recognized it from the Learning Resources catalog we had received in the mail!

I was really excited to use this set especially for my son who is 2 1/2 years old. Although he is a little young he does not seem to be understanding any concept of color at all. I am hoping that by continually working with this set he will begin to understand the difference between each color.
I like that this Farmer’s Market Color Sorting Set is visually appealing, sturdy, and offers a very wide variety of fruits and veggies. Even my 4 year old who knows all of his colors was absolutely thrilled to use these sets.Â

Look at all of that variety!! It’s great because you can do so much more with this set than *just* color sorting. Â You can use it for health nutritional lessons in teaching the children what the different types of fruits and veggies are, you can have the children sort the food into two piles: Fruits and Vegetables.
You can even create worksheets with the different types of foods and turn them into spelling lessons! The food is very realistic looking – I was immediately able to tell what each item was. And there are fruits and veggies that are not in “typical” food sets such as the apricot, onion, bell pepper, plum, etc.Â

You can also use this color sorting set to have color races between children and see who can fill their basket up the fastest. Since my children have a 2 year age difference and my little guy was at a disadvantage of not recognizing any colors we decided to turn out fruits and veggie time into a “learn to be patient” time and took turns each picking a fruit or veggie to put in the basket. It was a great tool for my oldest son.
