pinata balloon

Materials Needed

1 Balloon per Piggy Bank
Old newspaper or brown-bag paper
paper egg carton (not plastic!)
masking tape
flour-water glue (instructions below)
pink paint & brush (or any other color)
pipe cleaner for the tail
Optional: googly eyes
Instructions for Flour-water glue mixture: Mix 1 cup flour in 1 cup water until mix is thin & runny. Still the mix into 4 cups of boiling water. Simmer about 3 minutes, then cool.
  1. Blow up a balloon.
  2. Tear LOTS of strips of newspaper and/or brown bag paper. (about 1 inch or less wide)
  3. Dip each strip of paper in the flour glue & wrap it around the balloon. Make at least 2-3 layers completely surrounding the balloon. Let it dry at least overnight between each layer.
  4. When strips are dry, allow balloon paper mache to dry for several days.
  5. Once completely dry, separate 5 paper egg carton sections (these will be the legs & snout). Use masking tape to attach them to the pig body.
  6. Now it’s time to paint!! You can also glue small pieces of tissue paper on, but this is more messy & time consuming. We like to paint! Let dry overnight!
  7. Using a small knife cut a hole in the back end and insert the pipe cleaner for a tail. Glue on eyes or use a permanent marker. Draw on slots on the snout for the nose. Use the knife to cut a slot in the top of the pig for money to be inserted!!
