Five Summer Getaways Every Kid Should Experience

Ok- so there are really a LOT more than five that I would love to include but I’ll pick my favorites! There are so many things to do in the summer, and so much free time. The weather is usually beautiful outside and kids shouldn’t be cooped up indoors! I am a big supporter of getting your kids UP off the couch and OUT of the house- to play of course! 🙂 I am also a big supporter of family time. That being said, here are five summer getaways that every kid should experience!
The Beach
Whether you are headed to the beach just for fun, or to pick shells- there is a TON of things that one can do! Some beaches have shark teeth littering their shorelines that kids can spend hours picking. Here you can see my kids and their cousins spending precious time together. Kids can learn about the different shells one can find on the beach, and even look for the fish that swim along the shoreline! Since we’re so close to the ocean, we occasionally get to see a dolphin swimming not far from sure! Going to the beach is my number one fun experience that every kid should have the chance to participate in!
Museums/Zoos
Museums don’t have to be boring. They can be BOTH educational AND fun!! Here you can see my son “inside” a fish aquarium. You can visit a science museum, art, hands-on, history, children’s and an assortment of other museums with your kids! Even fun museum-type places like Ripley’s Believe it or Not is a lot of fun and a learning experience for kids.
Camping/Nature Trails
There is SO many educational experiences while camping or hiking on nature trails, not to mention the freedom of the wide open outdoors! Our family loves to go geocaching in our spare time which not only helps to teach the kids about direction but they are always on an exciting treasure hunt. Kids can learn about nature, animals, mushrooms, wildflowers, tracks, and an endless amount of other things! If you’re quiet and extra lucky you may see a deer or an armadillo depending on where in the country you are! Just sleeping in a tent I think is enough for most kids to have fun!
The Birthplace of Someone Famous
I know, sounds generic, but I think every kid should visit somewhere that a famous person lived. Henry Ford’s home, Abraham Lincoln’s home, Frank Lloyd Wright, etc. There are SO many options that can be tailored to your children’s age and interest. I have never personally cared for history but I have never forgotten my field trips and vacations to see memorabilia and homes of famous people! You can learn not only about the person but the time period the person lived in and the different equipment and household gear.
Disney

And of course, the magical world of Disney! I think this is a top request on MANY kids lists!! We are fortunate enough to know someone who works there so our kids get to go frequently. But I remember as a kid Disney was a HUGE thing- even if we only lived an hour away. It’s an amazing magical place for kids (and adults!) to visit. Our favorite thing? The fireworks at night!

Do you remember your first trip to Disney? How about visiting a famous place? Whether you had fun or not these places are etched into our memories! There are a TON of great places to take kids! My personal favorite is going on a cruise, but it seems more like a luxury to me than somewhere the kids should go.

  1. Disney is on the top of everyone's list! 🙂

I'm a history junkie so I love going to museums and historical places and learning more about "famous" people before me!

  2. Great minds think alike! I picked some of the same places. =)
