Homeschooler or Homeschooled?

I found this video some time ago on YouTube from a high schooler who is homeschooled- not a homeschooler! Confused? Watch her video to understand the difference!
I hope that no one took offense to this video! I watched it and thought it was really cute! I wanted to share this video to help debunk the myth that homeschoolers are weird- because the majority of the time this is not true!! My husband and I were both at some point in our education homeschooled, and I have certainly been considering it for my son- so please do not think that I am against homeschooling!
Homeschooling Facts:
1. Homeschooling is the fasted growing educational trend in the USA, and is expanding worldwide.
2. Homeschoolers participate in community activities more than the average adult.
3. 76% of homeschool graduates participated in a national/state election in the past 5 years. 29% of other adults voted.
4. Homeschoolers are composed of a demographically wide variety. (Christian, atheist, Mormon, all income families, families of varying degrees)
5. Homeschoolers generally score up to 30% higher than public school peers.
6. Did you know that many Ivy League Universities spend a large amount of resources recruiting homeschoolers?
Homeschooling is NOT right for everyone-but many students will excel greatly in this environment. I have friends that “homeschool” and all they do is a craft or a printable worksheet once every day or so. That is NOT homeschooling! Your kids can do that in daycare. There are SO many different types of homeschooling and there is no right way for any one person. This is a HUGE area that you could have a whole site on and still not cover all the areas of homeschooling! Has YOUR family tried homeschooling? What do you like/dislike about it? Let me know your thoughts and opinions! I’d love to hear them!

Share with your friends!

  1. My 17yo daughter loves that video! She gets a lot of laughs doing her version of it.

I have been educating my children at home for almost 18 years. I have three homeschool graduates, one who is graduating this year, and three students still actively homeschooling.

While I understand your concerns about families who do so little academic work, I also know homeschooling takes on different forms in different homes. Some of the most brilliant and articulate children I have met come from homes that have an unschooling approach. By all appearances, very little "schooling" is going on. I also know children who have stuck with a rigorous course of study who were admitted into top colleges, but don't seem very well adjusted.

There really is no perfect way to homeschool. It is my belief that children do their best when the parents take the individual child's needs in to account. I feel like I am always reinventing the wheel to meet the needs of the children that I am schooling.

Even at that, I know there will be gaps in my children’s education and needs that go unmet. Homeschooling is never perfect. Neither is any other education for that matter. It is what our family chooses.

  7. My teen showed me this a few years ago. I think it's clever. We home school, but like anything- it takes all kinds of folks!

We accidentally fell into homeschooling when we realized our oldest was bored in public school and they didn't really care. We tried to work within the system, but it just didn't work. When my mom and MIL (both ps teachers) began telling me to homeschool we decided to try it. For one year.

We are in year 6 now and love it. I can't imagine not being there to see my kids learn and grow!
