Xacto SchoolPro Electric Pencil Sharpener Teacher Review

This post may contain affiliate links, view our disclosure policy for details.

Xacto’s SchoolPro Electric Pencil Sharpener is a teacher-designed product made specifically to form safe rounded pencil points. This was definitely one of the first things we noticed when sharpening pencils. The point of the pencil is not too sharp that it would hurt if you poked someone with it (which, let’s face it- students don’t always use pencils appropriately!).
Not only does it make the pencil safer if used inappropriately, it also allows the pencil to be used longer as there is less breakage from a fragile sharp point. (It does not, however, produce a dull pencil.) Another thing we liked about the SchoolPro was that it is a very quick sharpener. You don’t have to hold your pencil in the sharpener for a lengthy amount of time to be sharpened. If you are sharpening a large amount of pencils- this is a life saver!
The sharpener features carbon steel sharpened blades, and can sharpen quite a variety of different pencils. As you can see in the picture below there are many different holes for different sized pencils. For my husband’s class, we found that we needed a size bigger than the “standard” setting for most of their pencils. Another big plus is the quietness of this sharpener. It is not loud and noisy, and does not disrupt the class while it’s in use. A lot of kids like to sharpen their pencils just to get out of their seat, and the SchoolPro definitely does a good job at keeping the noise level to a minimum.

One of my husband’s favorite things about Xacto’s SchoolPro Sharpener is the generous size of the shavings ‘drawer’.  He teaches a 2nd grade class full of students who are consistently sharpening their pencils and he can go through the entire day without needing to empty his sharpener. Because he teaches a younger level of children, however, their little fingers like to play with this shavings drawer, and many times they do not put it back into place and he ends up with shavings behind the drawer.
So he has learned to guard his sharpener away from his students! A higher level class probably wouldn’t have as much problems with students messing with the pencil sharpener. Although even with pretty bad student abuse my husband’s sharpener held up very well. He told me he had an Xacto SchoolPro in the past and after very rough student abuse it held up perfectly the better part of a year. (even though it did still work fine after that- it was just knocked around a bit!)
However, the great thing about the SchoolPro Electric Sharpener is that it comes with a 10 year warranty! When he called Xacto about his motor running funny, they promptly sent him a brand new one- no questions asked. I’d say that’s a pretty good product for your money!! And the customer service he dealt with was fantastic. (That sharpener was one we previously owned but the same brand/model.)

I took this picture so that you could see how deep the shavings drawer is. It is taller than your average glue stick, and unfortunately I did not have enough glue sticks to fill it at one time and take a picture, but it would have probably held about 12 standard glue sticks. It is really a good amount of room to hold all of the pencil shavings!
There were really only two things that my husband wishes was different with this sharpener. One is that he wished there was an automatic shut-off. The SchoolPro was designed not to oversharpen pencils- which it definitely does great at. And Xacto does make other sharpeners that have automatic shut-off features.
The other thing he had problems with (again, he teaches 2nd grade so the age level caused this problem!) was that his students were forever spinning the sharpening size wheel. Every time he went to sharpen pencils he would have to readjust the size. Something to keep in mind if you teach younger grades! He took care of this problem by making it a “teacher only” sharpener!
Overall, we both preferred this as an all-around good quality sharpener. It is definitely worth the price paid. Xacto’s SchoolPro Electric Sharpener is a good quality and sturdy sharpener. Some have claimed that it is too big but the size did not bother us at all. It can endure quite a bit of student abuse and hold up without a problem! The little things like a larger shavings drawer and a quiet noise makes the features of the SchoolPro an enjoyable experience.
You can buy Xacto’s SchoolPro Electric Pencil Sharpener at your local office supply store or on Amazon.

  112. Randominities says:

It's the sharpener that caught my eye. At my school ALL the sharpeners sharpen pencils on one side much better than the other. It is SO annoying! There is so much wood on one side that I have to use a scissor blade to shave it off.

Looking around I found the PALM STANDUP® MANUAL STAPLER. That is so nice because our staplers have a rubber piece on the bottom that is constantly falling off. And this stapler looks like it saves room and space is always at a premium.

Thanks so much! I love looking at new designs for school/office supplies.
