Black teeth. Cracked teeth. Filled teeth. Gold teeth. Silver teeth. Rotting teeth.
These are all things I’ve seen in kids mouths. 5 year olds with rotting teeth….it makes me so sad! Mouths lined with silver and gold. Maybe you’ve seen it too! Sure we all know the mantra to kids – brush and floss every day! But obviously not everyone is doing it (or making sure their kids are doing it!). Don’t get me wrong, there are certainly medical conditions, genetics and other things that can cause teeth to be less than healthy but many kids in America are not all enforcing good oral care habits! It’s right up there for me along with checking your kids vision! It’s SO important! Did I say SO important?! So I’ve partnered up with LISTERINE®, along with my entire family, to take the 21 day Challenge. Twice a day we will be brushing, flossing, and using mouthwash. I’d love for your family to join me too!
Did you know that brushing misses 75% of your mouth?
That’s why flossing and mouthwash are so important! I get it! Sometimes it’s hard to squeeze a full oral care routine into your schedule. Especially with kids. I’m lucky if I can just get them dressed and fed and on time to school! One way we really boost enthusiasm with our kids in the area of good oral health is to make it fun! I’m not one to buy into the “cute kids themed food” items but when it comes to getting the kids motivated to constantly keep up with good care in their mouth I’m all for whatever works! Pull out the fun toothbrushes and cartoon character mouthwash! My kids picked out the LISTERINE® SMART RINSE® Phineas & Ferb mouthwash (one of their favorite cartoons!) at Target to use each day.
Another way we really teach our kids about good oral health in a more visual way is through crafts, videos, books, and other resources at our disposal! As we began our 21 day challenge I cut out a cardboard tooth for each of my kids. (you can use felt, construction paper or whatever else you have on hand) I put a big glop of shaving cream on the “tooth”, handed the kids a toothbrush, and asked them to clean their tooth really good. Then we checked out each of their “teeth” and noticed how there was still big gaping sections of cardboard exposed and how long it actually took them just to clean their one “tooth”. It was a great hands-on and visual lesson tool for the kids to show them that even though they spend a lot of time “brushing” they don’t always get every single spot on their teeth cleaned!
SO what exactly are we doing for the next 21 days?
TWICE a day we will be:
1. Brushing our teeth with LISTERINE® WHITENING® Original Gel Flouride Anticavtiy Toothpaste
2. Rinsing afterwards with LISTERINE® Antiseptic (the kids are using LISTERINE® SMART RINSE®)
3. Using REACH floss to get down in between our teeth!
