powerful app for listening skills practice

Recently my son was diagnosed with a Language Processing Disorder which causes him to have issues with memory recall and auditory processing. I came across the Listening Power Grades K-3 HD app by Hamaguchi Apps and was immediately intrigued when I began reading about it. It was designed by a speech-language pathologist (Patti Hamaguchi, M.A., CCC-SLP) for kids who need to practice listening skills. Specifically in our case the core elements of auditory comprehension and memory. It seemed like this app was meant just for us.

I took the app to my husband at school and we downloaded it on the iPads there to see if it would be beneficial for both my son as well as any other students at the school. At the top right hand side of the screen it says “DEMO” so I started there to make sure I understood how to use the app and see what it had to offer. (You can see the full demo here.) WOW! The entire time I was thinking how much this would help my son and my husband was additionally thinking of specific students that would benefit from this app.

You can see here that there are a lot of options for difficulty level as well as how many options the student has for answering questions. You can even hide the score so that it doesn’t distract or discourage the student! What I noticed as we began using this app is there are a LOT of customizable options created by someone who understand kids with auditory needs. And those options vary based on difficulty level. You can hone in and focus on which specific area(s) your student has difficulty with.

The graphics are very simple and clean – not over busy. There’s no doubt that the Listening Power Grades K-3 HD app is extremely beneficial as an additional tool and practice for students with listening skill needs. I would purchase this as a parent to work with my son at home in addition to school and therapy and my husband is thrilled to have this app at school to work with multiple students during our personalized learning time.

Hamaguchi Apps has other fantastic app choices for speech, language, and auditory practice. I found a great one called “Between the Lines” for my son with autism!
