Fantastic Way to Encourage a Love of Books

My son is absolutely nuts about books. I can’t tell you how many hours a day we spend reading books- seriously! And he’s only 3 years old! It’s so simple to instill a love of books into a child from day one, but how do you encourage a child to read who doesn’t love books? Try a few of these things that my kids love to do on a regular basis!

    • Go to your local library. Seriously! Sounds funny, but you know how many of my friends have never been to the library? Even friends with kids as old as teenagers! And I know for a fact that most of husband’s students have never been to a library. With rows and rows of books, CD’s, DVD’s, and even sometimes special kids sections with puzzles & bean bag chairs. My library even has a youth room for teenagers-only with video games and everything! Most libraries also have great kids storytime programs too with puppets, singing, crafts, reading books, and educational films! I tell me son that he can pick out any 2 books and 2 videos he wants. And I really let him pick out whatever 2 books he wants- even if it’s not what I would have picked for him. The other week we came home with an advanced painting pumpkins book- but he loved looking at the pictures!
    • Have a child that can’t read or struggles to read? Rent or buy them audiobooks! My son absolutely adores audio books. We go online and rent our library books to pick up later. We rent BOTH the audio book, and the hard book itself so the child can read along with the tape. My son begs to listen to his audiobooks when we’re even just driving to the grocery store- and he always has to have the corresponding book to look through too! We are currently on “Pirates Don’t Change Diapers” by Melinda Long. Have an older child? Download audiobooks onto his/her MP3 player!
  • Make a special spot in your house for reading. Although we read books to our kids everywhere, I have made my son a special “reading corner” where he has a beanbag chair and a small stack of books that are just for him.
  • Keep a few books in the car. If the kids get bored on the way to the grocery store or waiting in the car for you to run errands, they’ll be tempted to pick up the book if they have nothing better to do!
  • In the classroom there are several different book programs such as Book-It! that you can participate in to encourage your students to read. One of my favorite teachers used to read us 1 chapter from a book every day and we absolutely loved listening to her stories!
  • Do your kids have a favorite movie? Buy the corresponding book with it- they’ll be more likely to enjoy it if it is something that is already their favorite!
