Since 1991 the federal government has deemed October to be “Energy Awareness Month” but to be honest I think it’s important to be aware of your energy usage EVERY month! Not only can it save (or cost!) you a bundle but it’s just a good practice not to be wasteful! I love that this makes it so easy for you to find more than 2300 ENERGY STAR® certified products both online and in their stores. Any time we look for a new appliance we are always looking for that ENERGY STAR label! PLUS it also helps connect you with local utilities rebates to maximize your savings (up to $300) which is really cool! In fact you can even search for local rebates!

Online the first place I look when checking for appliances! And energy efficiency is SO important in our household – especially with kids! And now that we live in Iowa and have such extreme hot and cold weather it’s even more important! Our utility bills can get really out of hand if we aren’t careful!! If you have kids you know what I mean!! Between the fridge door being left open, or having a fridge that’s 30+ years old like we do – I sure need all the help I can get with conserving energy! Here are a few energy saving tips that help our family out:

  •  Install a programmable thermostat.
  • Replace your old light bulbs with new energy saving bulbs!
  • Help your freezer use less energy- keep it full!
  • Only wash laundry/dishes if you have a full load to run.
  • Only purchase ENERGY STAR certified appliances.
  • Open your windows at night to let the cool air in and turn off your air conditioner.

Growing up I knew that my mom always looked for ENERGY STAR certified appliances, but I always thought of big things like a stove, fridge, or dishwasher. But did you know that you can also buy ENERGY STAR certified TVs, phones, computers, printers and more?!

ENERGY STAR is a U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) voluntary program that helps businesses and individuals save money and protect our climate through superior energy efficiency.
