Today’s Literature Monday is on The Indian in the Cupboard series by Lynne Reid Banks. It was first published in 1980, and made into a movie in 1995. The original Books “The Indian in the Cupboard” was followed by four additional books- “The Return of the Indian”, “The Secret of the Indian”, The Mystery of the Cupboard”, and “The Key to the Indian”. If you have never read this series it is an enjoyable one- although it’s been many years since I’ve read it myself!
The story is about a boy who locks a plastic Indian figurine in a cupboard, and when he opens the cupboard again the Indian had come to life! His friend then brings over a soldier and locks him in the cupboard, thus bringing him to life. Can the boys get their figurines back in time to save their comrades?  Over the years this series has been a pretty popular ‘mandatory’ read for children novels in schools across the nation.

  1. I used to LOVE those when I was a kid, I remember my 4th grade teacher reading them to me. However since I've gone through multicultural education classes and so forth, I've realized these book perpetuate stereotypes about native americans. I have found many other more culturally respectful books, but I do like the plot of Indian in the Cupboard. Perhaps they can remake it?
