The Dirty Dozen has just been published for 2011- and it has reminded me of why I buy specific fruits/veggies organic- no matter what the cost! A shocking 98% of apples contain pesticide on it – even AFTER being rinsed in cold water for 10 seconds!
So how much pesticides are you OK letting your children eat?
Here is the list of the “dirty dozen” for this year- the fruits/veggies with the highest pesticide rate:
1. Apples
2. Celery
3. Strawberries
4. Peaches
5. Spinach
6. Nectarines
7. Grapes
8. Sweet bell peppers
9. Potatoes
10. Blueberries
11. Lettuce
12. Kale/collard greens
Eat the “Clean” Fruits/Veggies listed below and you will reduce your pesticide intake by a whopping 92%!
1. Onions
2. Corn
3. Pineapples
4. Avocado
5. Asparagus
6. Sweet peas

8. Eggplant
9. Cantaloupe

Thanks for the post. I always try to buy organic, but there are times when I just don't because of cost or not being able to find it. I will make sure to check my apples, applesauce, and everything else that contains any kind of apple parts the next time I shop. I had no idea that the pesticide rate was so high!
I was also surprised to see that cabbage is on the low list. Cabbage moths have eaten up any attempts I have made to grow my own that I finally just gave up! I'm glad to know that it should be easy to find an organic version at the store!
