DIY Seed Bombs and Custom Gift Bag Tutorial

I love gardening and even more than that I LOVE receiving DIY Garden Gifts like these DIY Seed Bombs I made! It’s such a creative and useful gift that even kids can make! You can custom create these to design entire gardens or butterfly kits or just gift them out as thoughtful Valentine’s Day and Earth Day gifts! I know we’re going to make some more for Mother’s Day this year!

Follow my simple tutorial below to not only make your own seed bombs but also to make your own simple custom bags! If you don’t have clay of any sort on hand and can’t buy any right now you CAN use non-laminated paper to wrap around your dirt if you really need to. Construction paper also works in a pinch.

This DIY Seed Bomb tutorial is incredibly simple and makes a thoughtful unique gift for gardeners! It’s also a fun nature Valentine’s Day gift and even fun for use as wedding favors! Make a set for your kid’s for Valentine’s Day to plant their own butterfly garden! I love gardening and would find this gift so creative!

Begin by grabbing a small handful of air dry clay and flattening it down with the palm of your hand. Don’t make it too thin though! Then spoon and small spoonful of dirt onto the air dry clay and sprinkle some seeds of your choice over the dirt. For my seed bombs I bought creeping myrtle seeds but you can use whatever you want! My next set I will be creating a mix of various flowers seeds for a butterfly garden!

Carefully roll up the air dry clay around the dirt and seeds and press into a ball. If you roll the ball too much you’ll tend to rip small holes in the clay – if this happens just pinch some extra clay and press it over the holes. Let air dry for 3 days and then package for your gift!

I recommend looking around for which stamp styles you like and what message you want to portray on your custom bags! Then lay out your stamps and decide your design for each one before getting started!

I ordered a selection of Valentine’s Day stamps from Oriental Trading including the fancy script one above. I was imaging a beautiful vintage feel script but personally ended up preferring the very bold stamps you see below.

After stamping my stamps onto the bags I decided I wanted them bolder than the faint design shadowed on so I traced and filled in each bag with a fine point Sharpie marker.

They turned out much nicer once I filled in the color! I absolutely LOVE how they turned out! And these can be used for Valentine’s Day gifts, thoughtful teacher appreciation gifts, Mother’s Day, Earth Day, or any other garden loving project you want to create!

When your seed bombs have dried and you’ve completed your custom bag designs simple wrap the seed bombs in a small sheet of tissue paper or place them directly into the bag and draw the string tight! If you want you can even create a custom card for your seeds explaining what they will grow and how to use them!

How to Use Seed Bombs:

Just dig a hole and place one seed bomb inside, water, then completely cover up with dirt and watch it grow! If you really want to get creative you can give these gifts inside small flower pots! This is a fantastic gift for children to make as well!
