Xacto’s PivotCut Rotary Trimmer Review

This post may contain affiliate links, view our disclosure policy for details.

Xacto’s PivotCut Innovative Trimmer is truly an innovative one-of-a-kind rotary cutting tool which can be used for a large variety of purposes!
Here are just a few of the fantastic features which it offers:

Pivot arm creates accurate angles from 0 to 45 degrees
Paper locking system holds paper in place while trimming
Self-healing mat
See-through rail with LED illumination for precision cutting
Storage compartment for accessories
Safety feature- cutting edge is only exposed when the blade is engaged
Easily replace blades with patented cartridge system
Cuts photo, card stock, thin plastic, and more
Cuts up to 10 sheets

Carbon steel sharpened blade

You can actually see the LED illumination in the picture above! I was very eager to try out this new rotary trimmer, as was my husband! In fact the first day after I received it I couldn’t find it! I thought he had taken it to school with him before I could even check it out- but he had just put it up high where the kids couldn’t play with it! Sadly though since I have done my review my husband has stolen it away for his classroom!!!

There are several neat features to this PivotCut Rotary Trimmer, but by far the best one is that it cuts angles! If you have EVER done projects where you’ve used a paper trimmer (or cut your papers/photos by hand!) you know how tedious and time-consuming it is to move everything around and cut a zillion angles! Well this PivotCut saves you a tremendous amount of time (and boredom!!) The pivot arm actually ‘locks’ into place at certain designated angles that you would typically cut at such as 22.5 degrees, 30 degrees, and 45 degrees. There are also markings for sizes which is perfect for photos: 4″x6″, 5″x7″, 8″x10″, and 8.5″x11″.
Another thing I’d like to point out is that the mat (or surface you are working on as seen above) is self-healing. That means that when you drag the blade across the mat to cut your project, it does NOT leave slice marks across the mat that you’ll get caught on later. The mat “self-heals” and returns to its original state.

One thing I was a little concerned about initially with having a trimmer in my house was my kids. My boys get into everything and a sharp blade is always an area of concern! I love the PivotCut because the blade only comes out when it is engaged. And there is simply no possible way for them to stick their fingers underneath it anyways- I tried! As for actually replacing the blade- it is so simple! Xacto has a patented cartridge system where you can easily twist the knob you see below, and the blade cartridge pops out.

Below you can see the knob on the side which actually will lock the paper, photo, etc. into place. You can see on my video later where I actually locked the switch in place, and cut my project without holding my paper and it still gave me a perfect cut. When you flip it into the locked position the red LED illuminator turns on as you can also see in the below picture.

I’m not sure why the picture below keeps flipping on me, but I wanted to include it so that you could see the ‘secret’ drawer on the side where you can store extra blades or other project material.

Xacto’s Pivot Cut Innovative Rotary Trimmer is a fantastic idea for teachers, classrooms, offices, scrapbookers, photographers, craft designers, copy shops, hobbyists, and more! I know a LOT of teachers mentioned to me a few months ago that they were drooling over some of Xacto’s paper trimmers! Now this one will cause even more envy!
I’ve included a video below so you can actually see the trimmer hands-on. It was a little difficult as I was holding my camera in one hand and using the trimmer with one hand (left handed no less!) so forgive any errors please- it was a little hard to concentrate on talking, holding the camera, and doing a project all at once!!

What did we think? We loved it! It is a huge time saver, safe with kiddos around, we loved the extra storage drawer, and the pivot arm was very simple to move around. I loved the invent way that the arm ‘locks’ into place at different angles. The foot that keeps the paper in place works great. I was also very surprised at how light this trimmer actually was. For all of the benefits it provides- it’s so nice that you don’t have to lug around a heavy piece of equipment!! This product is definitely worth the investment. You will not regret purchasing this product! As always from Xacto- it is a great quality product that will save you countless hours on projects for many years!
