Virtual Reality, also abbreviated as VR, explores a whole new world of possibilities. Although there are both many pros and cons into diving into the VR world (which I’m not debating here as it’s such a newer consumer technology) I expect that in less than ten years most families will have a VR headset in their home. Just download free apps from the app store and get started!

If you’re not sure about jumping into the world I recommend starting with a cheap pair of Google Cardboard VR “glasses” to start – you can find them for around $6. (Or if you have a younger child check out the View-Master VR set.) One glance on Amazon will show you that the at home Virtual Reality market is expanding VERY rapidly! And believe it or not the best educational VR apps are on the upswing!

My oldest son with autism is quite obsessed with technology so we decided to make the leap and settled on a Samsung Virtual Reality headset for him. I have poured into hours of research about time restrictions on VR, side effects, best VR apps for kids, etc. He first came across VR after hearing about the Goosebumps Virtual Reality app on the app store and he’s been begging for a set ever since. Of course he’d probably be over the moon to try out an Oculus Rift VR headset ($600+) that is definitely not in this teacher family’s budget!

I know there are some fabulous classroom geared VR programs out there (albeit rather pricey in my opinion) but these educational apps in the app store listed below are specifically geared for families at home.

Below are the apps that we will be starting with. I’ll expand this list as I come across more! If you know or use other VR apps that are great for kids please leave me a comment below so that I can add them to our list! I’d LOVE to have some more options!
