Today’s Around the Globe Wednesday is one that I have personally been to. It is the House on the Rock in Wisconsin.
House on the Rock is definetely one of the most unique, eclectic, and overwhelming places I have ever been! It was opened in 1959 by Alex Jordan, Jr. Story goes that he met Frank Lloyd Wright to show him some building plans earlier in his life, and Mr. Wright told him that he couldn’t build worth anything and he refused to entertain his ideas. Alex got so mad that he decided to build an amazing place no one else could compare to. At least this is the story I found online. When we visited the House on the Rock we read that Alex was an eccentric man who lived alone and was extremely poor. He decided to build this amazing place and collected all sorts of interesting things. He began charging a nickel for all the people that began showing up to see what he was doing. He then would take that money and buy more materials and collections for this house of his which he built around a large rock spire. Eventually he increased his admission to $.50. He actually lived at this location, fully intending for it to be his house, but it is now a tourist attraction.
