As a mother of two boys I know the dreamy look in my kids eyes when they hear the word “rockets”! Anytime my son sees anything remotely related to rockets he begs for one. I’m secretly hoping it’s a little engineer blood in him but either way not only are rockets a “blast” (pun intended!) but they can be so highly educational for ALL age groups. From 2 years old to 99 years old – rockets have a lot to teach us about basic cause and effect, engineering, physics, and more. Here are some inexpensive rockets for the youngest kids as well as high quality rocket sets for your older kids.
These cheap foam rockets are only $5.71 for a dozen sets! These are awesome for little kids parties, classroom parties, potty prizes, and any other reason you can think of! Although it says it is for ages 5+ I would personally have used them with my kids as young as 2 years old. This foam rocket set will teach basic cause and effect principles that kids can explore on their own.
If you’re not quite ready to graduate to the larger rockets which actually ignite these Stomp Rockets are a fantastic alternative and cost only about $15. It says that these can go up to 200 feet but if you have younger kids they can still launch it considerably high.
If you’re really looking for a wow factor or have teens who are looking for a pretty awesome project you’ll find nothing better than the Estes Rockets. You can easily find a pair for roughly about $30 and you can purchase additional rocket engines separately as well. You will definitely need the largest open field you can find for this one but it’s worth the WOW factor!
Another really fun rocket which would make a great family activity night is to build a Water Rocket or even this Rocket Race Car Kit which are both relatively inexpensive. You can of course create a rocket-like effect with a warm 2L of Diet Coke and about 5-6 Mentos. But be forewarned – it can get REALLY messy and you have to move lightning quick!
